Gordon & MacPhail, the renowned Elgin based whisky merchant, is transforming its historic South Street premises into a unique whisky visitor experience, featuring displays, tasting rooms, and a liquid library of some of the world’s rarest whiskies. While the work is in progress, the company is opening a temporary shop next to the entrance of the St Giles Centre on Elgin High Street, ensuring uninterrupted service for its customers.
Established in 1895 by James Gordon and John Alexander MacPhail, the family-owned business has evolved from a grocery store to a prominent player in the whisky industry, celebrated for its extensive portfolio of rare old whiskies and iconic ranges like the Connoisseurs Choice. The company remains under the stewardship of the Urquhart family, who have steered its growth and diversification throughout generations.
The redevelopment of the South Street store will blend its rich heritage with an immersive world-class visitor experience. Visitors will be treated to interactive displays, state-of-the-art tasting rooms, and an exclusive liquid library showcasing some of the world’s most sought-after whiskies. The new whisky visitor attraction will make Elgin an essential stop for any whisky minded visitor to Speyside. To maintain service during the renovations, a temporary shop is opening on Elgin High Street in Spring 2023. The click & collect service and online offerings will continue to be available, with orders collected from Unit 1, 121 High Street, Elgin, Monday to Saturday between 10am and 5pm. Customers can also place orders over the phone by calling 01343 545 110.
Gordon & MacPhail has made a name for itself in the Scotch whisky industry by bottling some of the oldest single malt Scotch whiskies in the world, including the Generations Mortlach 75 Years Old. The company owns the Benromach Distillery and newly constructed The Cairn Distillery, in the Cairngorms National Park, which started producing spirit in July 2022.
As the redevelopment of the South Street store unfolds behind the shrouding at 58-60 South Street, Elgin, whisky aficionados and local residents alike can anticipate an exciting and immersive whisky visitor experience that honors the rich history and expertise of Gordon & MacPhail, an iconic Speyside institution.
