Have you ever noticed this locker unit at Elgin train station and wondered what it was? Well, it’s a bike hire vending machine installed by Brompton Bike Hire in partnership with HiTravel.
The unit has been there since autumn 2021, but now Scotrail have teamed up with Brompton to offer a days bike hire free from the train station lockers. To take advantage of the offer, all you need to do is get the app, register and enter the promotion code ‘SCOTRAIL’.
Brompton Bike Hire launched in 2011 to provide a cycle hire scheme accessible to all – and affordable. The fact they’ve made it to Elgin certainly shows they’re succeeding in their mission. In fact, there are now close to 80 cycle ‘docks’ throughout the UK.
It’s a breeze to get started – download the free app, reserve your bike hire, pick it up and return it when you’re done. A simple flat rate of £6.50 per day applies – keep it for as long as you need it. Although there are already options for bike hire in Elgin, these lockers are accessible 24 hours a day, every day of the year.
ScotRail say they hope that the tie up will help people explore the best that scenic Scotland has to offer. They hope to encourage an active lifestyle with great economic benefits for the tourist industry in these areas.
Commenting on the bike hire facility at Elgin Train station, Nicola Moss from Moray Council said, “Connectivity is a major consideration when people make travel plans. It made perfect sense to locate the bike hire kiosk within the council’s car park by the railway station in Elgin. We hope this will encourage more sustainable and active travel as the infrastructure is put in place to support choice.”
The Brompton bike was invented in London in 1975. The folding bike has small wheels mean fast acceleration and increased maneuverability. Brompton is now the UK’s largest bike maker with some 45000 bikes produced annually.
